Starved Rock Trail Closures

It has come to our attention that many people believe all of Starved Rock State Park is closed due to storm damage.  This is not true, but I would venture a guess that 80% is.  There are three canyons open, Illinois, Kaskaskia and Ottawa.  The council overhang is in with those as well.  The iconic "Starved Rock" and the immediate area around it, the lodge and visitor center is open.  Besides that, all of Matthiessen State Park and Buffalo Rock State Park are unscathed from the storms.  If this is the first time you've heard of this, what happened over a month ago was we got hit by a pretty bad storm, straight line winds of 65 MPH with gusts way over that.  The worst of it seemed to concentrate around Starved Rock and the winds knocked down hundreds of trees.  Clean up is proving to be harrowing as these trails are pretty secluded and it's hard to get machinery down them.  So there's that, the lack of people to help clean up and the squeezing of an already tight budget.  All of which leads to an agonizingly slow clean up process.  But please let me restate the fact that Matthiessen and Buffalo Rock State Parks are 100% OPEN!  If you are worried about what happened to little ol us in the storm, please don't, we lost the top of one of our trees and that's it.  So please don't think for a second that there will be nothing for you to do when you come down here.  There is still a lot of hiking trails open and there's plenty of other things to do in the area as well.  Just go to our nearby attractions to see all the fun stuff that there is to do.  Horseback riding, canoeing and wine tasting just to name a few.  So come on down, the water is just fine!
