hd-blog Welcome to our blog page!  In here you can find out about some things that are going on in the area or maybe some insight into things you can do.  Every once in awhile, you may even catch us just writing down some of our thoughts and day to day activities.  So, Please feel free to have a look around and let us know if you have any questions!

New Credit Card Processor

The Brightwood Inn has a new credit card processor.  Anyone using a coupon or gift certificate or anything like that, please call us to make your reservation.  All on line reservations will have their credit cards run through for half the amount of the room.  This new processor should make life a little bit easier for us, but at the same time, some things will change.  So once again, please call us to make reservations IF you have a coupon, voucher, gift certificate or anything like that.  THANK YOU!!

Available Rooms

If you don’t see the room that you want available on the online reservations give us a call at 815-667-4600 between 8am and 6pm, and we can see if there is anything we can do.   Our Savannah room is brand new and does not show up on the online reservations.  The only way to book it is by phone.

Be Cautious!

I received a couple of calls this week from people who were trying to book a room here at the inn from sites other than our own.  One man was told that our $135 rooms have Jacuzzi’s, and were available for Saturday evening. Neither of the those rooms have Jacuzzi’s and we have no available rooms for Saturday April 14th.  The other was a woman who was told that pets stay free and are welcome in any room. It clearly states on the policy page on the Brightwood Inn website that pets are welcome on the first floor only and are $25 plus tax per pet per night.

Last weekend we had a couple come in who had made reservations on another site, and when they got here they wanted to know where our horse stables and trails were.  We do not have horseback riding on our property. There are stables very close to us, but not on our property. They had a print out that showed we had horseback riding on site.

Please, when you make your reservations, book directly with the property you are considering to prevent these kinds of things from happening. There are dozens of sites out there concerning the Brightwood Inn.  The majority have never contacted us, know nothing about us, and make claims that are not true.  We can only be responsible for the content of our website and our website alone.  Please call us at 815-667-4600 if you have any questions.  Thank You

Beware the Ides of March

March turned out to be the warmest March in recorded history.  It seems like we’ve been through a lot of record breakers lately.  Unfortunately, now we are having below normal temperatures for April.  So that really warm month got everything jumping out of the ground really good, and now we are having below 32 degree nights, which means every evening we are running around covering things up.  But, you can’t cover EVERYTHING up, so there has been some damage to our poor spring plants.  Some of them I know have good roots and they bounce right back, others, I’m not so sure.  One thing we did cover up really good was our strawberries.  A good customer and friend of ours, Clem Jasiek, donated 50 strawberry plants this spring. They came as lifeless bare root plants and the instructions said to plant immediately, so I did.  As I was planting the little things, I couldn’t help but wonder if it was all in vain, they really looked dead.  I planted them anyway and watered really, really good.  I will be dipped in >insert your foul substance here<, they shot up one to two inches overnight! So now we have to baby the little things otherwise my work WILL be in vain.  They are called “Whoppers”, so hopefully next year we’ll have some giant, juicy strawberries.  We already had about 50 plants from last year, so our field is filling in nicely.  The plants from last year are getting pretty big and they’ve been flowering for a couple of weeks now.  I think the temperatures need to steady out a bit before they start forming strawberries though.  Looks like next week we’ll have below 32 degree nights again, so, if anybody needs us, you can find us in the strawberry patch. 🙂

Spring in Full Bloom!

Well, spring has definitely sprung here at the Brightwood Inn.  Flowers are blooming all over the place and I have to cut the grass……….again.  AND IT’S ONLY MARCH!  This is crazy, but you sure can’t beat this weather.  Today I went around the Inn, taking pictures.  I love strolling around our grounds in springtime.  I like to watch all the things we planted out here turn green and start to grow again.  The lilacs are almost in full bloom and you can’t go anywhere without smelling them.  I would rank the smell of lilacs in the top three of flower scents.  Honeysuckle and black locust would be there as well.  As a side note to anyone that likes to come down for Starved Rocks’ wildflower walk, the time they have it scheduled for will be too late.  Mother Nature is a fickle woman, this year she decided to bring spring much earlier than anytime before.  I would say the next couple of weeks will probably be peak for wild flowers in the parks.  I walked into the woods a little bit today and saw a few here and there.  I’d bet that if I walked a little farther, I would have found a lot more. So if you’re coming down (up, over, whatever) to the parks, make sure you stop by the Brightwood Inn.  Better yet, stay in one of our beautiful rooms, and we’ll serve you a great breakfast to start the day and hit the trails.  Everyone at the Brightwood Inn hopes you’ll have a wonderful day!

Leap Year Special

Leap yearAccording to an old Irish legend, St Bridget struck a deal with St Patrick to allow women to propose to men all year long during leap years. This is believed to have been introduced to balance the traditional roles of men and women in a similar way to how Leap Day balances the calendar.

In honor of this Leap Year tradition we would like to offer half price rooms to any woman who will be proposing to her man on Wednesday, February 29th. Comes with a bottle of champagne and chocolate truffles.

What the heck we offer this to everyone who is proposing to their partner on Wednesday, February 29th!
